Summer In Arizona

I was born and raised in Southern California.  Salty air, ocean breeze and basically great weather 365 days a year - no complaints here.  But life has recently moved us to Yuma, AZ…."YUMA, AZ!!! Ugh!"  Living in the desert is nothing new to me, though.  After college I headed east to Phoenix, AZ.  There were so many more opportunities in the field of architecture at the time.  So off I went.  I spent nine years there and it was better than I ever could have imagined.  Really!  But when temperatures reach 100 plus degrees in the summertime, I just want to crawl in a whole (a comfortable 70 degrees, of course) never to be seen again until Fall.

In order to maintain my sanity during this awesome time of year {insert sarcasm here}, water is a must, and lots of it!  I drink it.  Swim in it.  Freeze it.  Spray it on my face.  I carry it with me, EVERYWHERE!  In Phoenix, shopping centers and cafe's even greet visitors by showering them with a fine, cool mist.  Awwww…. And it goes without saying that I avoid direct sun for long periods of time, at all costs!!  Early morning and late evening activities are in order with A/C filled afternoons.  I tend to run errands after the sun goes down and it's usually less crowded in stores at night anyways.  But when I do have to go out, shaded parking is the number one priority.  Front parking spot open?  Awesome!  But, no thanks…I'll keep going and make my way to the trees in the back.  And when I just can't take it anymore and need to escape the heat, a weekend get-a-way to San Diego is just a three hour adventure away.

After the sun goes down, amazing things happen.

After the sun goes down, amazing things happen.

Seriously, summer in Arizona is no joke but the rest of the year the weather is amazing.  So while most of the country is freezing their buns off in winter, us Arizonan's are living comfortably.  I guess a few months of unbearable heat is a small price to pay for having such amazing weather the rest of the year.  And if all this talk about smoldering temperatures is getting you down, look on the bright side, you can always bake cookies on the dashboard of your car.  Seriously!
